The ABC categories of wires and cables, unless otherwise defined, generally indicate the required flame retardancy rating for bundled cables. Below, we'll explain how wires and cables are classified, their flame retardancy standards, and their meanings.

1. Cable ABC Categories

The ABC category of cables is an important identifier for evaluating the flame retardancy of cables. It's usually listed before the cable model number, for example: ZRA-YJV, ZRB-YJV, and ZRA-KVV. The order of flame retardancy is A > B > C. Different cable types are regulated by their corresponding standards. In China, the flame retardancy rating of wires and cables is primarily based on GB/T 18380-2008, "Electric and Optical Fiber Cables - Flame Tests Under Flame Conditions."

II. Test Methods for Cables of Class A, B, and C

Specimens are cut from finished cables, each 3.5m long. The number of specimens is divided into three categories based on the volume of non-metallic material contained per meter of bundled wire and cable:

Class A: The number of specimens should be such that the total volume of non-metallic material per meter is 7L.

Class B: The number of specimens should be such that the total volume of non-metallic material per meter is 3.5L.

Class C: The number of specimens should be such that the total volume of non-metallic material per meter is 1.5L.

III. Flame Retardancy Test Standards for Wires and Cables of Class A, B, and C

Class A has the most stringent flame retardancy requirements. Class B also has high requirements and is suitable for applications with strict flame retardancy requirements. Class C is generally flame retardant and is suitable for most applications requiring flame retardancy.

IV. Symbolic Representation of Cable Flame Retardancy Classes of Class A, B, and C

Wires and cables that are difficult to ignite and have the ability to prevent or delay the spread of flame. Classification: A-D. Class A has the highest flame retardancy.

Generally, the ZR you see is ZRC. ZRC or ZR indicates Class C flame retardant, ZRB or ZB indicates Class B flame retardant, and ZRA or ZA indicates Class A flame retardant.
